Introduction
While it is not currently possible to directly migrate a Classic Quizzes Question Bank to a New Quizzes Item bank, Canvas is actively working on a solution, and we hope to have more information and availability dates regarding that migration tool soon.
If you have an existing Classic Quiz that already has a Question Bank attached to it, all you need to do is:
- Export the Classic Quiz as a QTI File
- Reimporting the QTI File as an Item Bank
If you have a Question Bank that is not attached to a Classic Quiz currently, you will have to:
- Create a Classic Quiz
- Adding Question Bank Questions to the Classic Quiz
- Exporting the Classic Quiz as a QTI File
- Reimporting the QTI File as an Item Bank
Instructions
Create a Classic Quiz
1. Navigate to your Quizzes page within your course and select the blue "+Quiz" button in the upper right-hander corner of the page.
2. In the window that appears, select Classic Quizzes, then click Submit.
NOTE: If you need to reset your Quiz Engine choice (Classic Quizzes vs. New Quizzes), you can do so by navigating to your Quizzes page and selecting the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the page. In the list that appears, select Reset quiz engine choice.
3. In the edit view of the Classic Quiz, add a descriptive title relevant to the question bank you plan to migrate. Once migrated, the same title will be applied to the Item Bank.
Add Question Bank Questions to the Classic Quiz
4. Select the Questions tab, then select the Find Questions button.
5. From the left-hand menu select the Question Bank you want to convert, press Select All on the right side, then select Add Questions.
6. Select Save.
Export the Classic Quiz as a QTI File
7. Navigate to your course's Settings page and select Export Course Content from the list of options near the right-hand side of the page.
8. Select Quiz as the export type, select the Classic Quiz that was just created, then select Create Export.
9. Once the export has completely processed, click on the New Export link to download the QTI file (please note, you will not need to open this file, but you will need to know where it was saved on your device). If you have refreshed the page, or if you left the page and came back, the downloadable link will instead say QTI Export.
Reimport the QTI File as an Item Bank
10. Next, navigate to the Item Banks page using the link in the navigation menu on the left-hand side of your course. If you do not see it listed, please follow the steps provided in this Canvas Guide to enable it.
11. Select the blue "+Bank" button in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
12. Give your Item Bank a temporary name. As previously mentioned, this name will be replaced with the name of the Classic Quiz after we import the QTI file into this Item Bank.
13. You will now see your new Item Bank in the Item Banks page under All Banks. If you don't immediately see it, you can use the 'Search' field to narrow down your results and locate it. Once found, select your Item Bank to open it.
14. After opening your item bank, select the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of the page, and select Import Content.
15. In the window that appears, select Browse.
16. Locate and select the QTI export (.zip file) that we downloaded earlier, then select Open.
17. Select Import.
Your Item Bank is ready to be used in New Quizzes.
