What's important to know about UCF VPN (short for Virtual Private Network) is that it should only be used when you need it to securely access some on-campus resources. There are many UCF sites and services you can access without the need for VPN.
This article will help guide you through scenarios that do not require VPN, followed by those services that do require VPN.
Resources you can reach without connecting to the UCF VPN:
1. All files in Microsoft OneDrive, Teams, or SharePoint
2. Most Peoplesoft tools in myUCF (e.g.,Employee Self Service / Student Self Service)
3. Accessing UCF Apps
4. When using a web browser to access most of UCF websites and the rest of the internet
5. Running programs that are installed locally on the computer and don’t need to checkout a license from a UCF server
6. When joining a video conference in applications such as Teams, Skype for Business etc.
7. Accessing UCF library resources
8. Webcourses@UCF
When it is required to connect to the UCF VPN:
1. Accessing shared department folders not hosted by Microsoft Teams
2. Downloading software from Software Center
3. Accessing sensitive / protected data through myUCF. (e.g.,Financials)
4. Utilizing Remote Desktop (RDP) to access a UCF device that is on campus
5. When accessing applications that utilize UCF licensing servers to provide access
