Panopto Analytics: Understanding Viewer Engagement and Video Performance
Overview
Panopto Analytics provides instructors with valuable insights into student engagement and video performance. By using analytics, you can track how students interact with your content, measure completion rates, and make data-driven decisions to improve learning outcomes.
Note: You can view data on an individual video or across your entire course folder.
Accessing Panopto Analytics
- Log in to Webcourses@UCF and browse to your lecture capture course.
- Click Panopto Videos in the course navigation menu.
- For statistics on an individual video, click the three dots for a dropdown menu and select “Stats.”

- For statistics on all videos in your course folder, look at the top right of your Panopto folder. Click on the “Statistics” icon or use the dropdown menu to select “Statistics.”

Key Analytics Features
Panopto offers several key metrics to help instructors assess engagement:
1. Views and Unique Viewers
- Tracks how many times a video has been played.
- Identifies how many unique users have accessed the content.
2. Heat Maps
- Displays which parts of the video are watched the most or rewatched.
- Useful for identifying areas where students may need additional clarification.

Top Viewers Table
- Lists the top viewers of the video session.
- Can be sorted alphabetically by Viewer or by Views and Downloads, Minutes Delivered, Average Minutes Delivered, Percent Completed, Notes, and Comments.
Note: The Percent Completed column will appear blank if a user downloads the session instead of watching it in the Viewer. If “See All” is selected, all viewers of the session will be displayed.
Look for the “Download” arrow to the right of the table. This will allow you to download all the data in an easy-to-read .csv file. All users, not just the top users, will be included in your file data.

Note on Anonymous Viewers
You may see anonymous views listed in your session’s statistics. These appear for the following reasons:
- Any time a session is viewed by someone who is not logged into Panopto (e.g., if the session is shared publicly or with a direct link).
- If a user who had permission to view the video at the time of viewing has their account deleted, they will show as Anonymous in the analytics for the video.
- If a video is shared via direct invite/email, this permits someone to view the video without logging in, resulting in the viewer showing up as Anonymous in the analytics.
How to Use Analytics to Improve Instruction
- Identify struggling students: If analytics show that certain students are not watching or are stopping early, follow up with them.
- Refine content length: If students consistently drop off at a certain time, consider breaking longer videos into shorter segments.
- Improve clarity: Frequent rewatches of a particular section may indicate a confusing concept that needs reinforcement.
- Measure engagement over time: Compare analytics across multiple videos to see what teaching methods work best.
