How to Verify Updates for WannaCry Ransomware Vulnerability on Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016


This article applies to Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016. This article will show the step-by-step process to verify the correct update has been installed on a computer that re-mediates the exploit used by the WannaCry ransomware.  

 
Microsoft released updates during the March patch cycle that re-mediate the vulnerabilities the WannaCry ransomware exploits.  As long as the cumulative update released in March or a more recent cumulative update is installed on a computer, the computer is not vulnerable to the WannaCry ransomware exploit.
  1. Type Windows Update into the windows search bar and select Windows Update Settings


  2. Select Update History


  3. Search the Update History for an update that starts with Cumulative Update for Windows 10…


  4. Verify that the KB Number associated with the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 is one of the following or higher and that the update was Successfully installed


Please Note: Updates in Windows 10 and Server 2016 are cumulative and supersede older updates.  The KB numbers listed above may not be in the update history but as long as a cumulative update with a higher KB number is listed, a more recent cumulative update is installed
