Creating a Panopto Assignment Folder in Canvas as an Instructor

Introduction

This article explains how instructors can create Panopto assignment folders in Canvas in order to allow students to submit video assignment submissions.

Instructions

1. In your Canvas course, select Panopto Videos from the left-hand navigation.

2. In the course folder that appears, select the Settings icon from the upper right corner, which appears as a cogwheel.

3. On the Overview tab of the window that appears, select Create Assignment Folder.

Please note:

  • The Canvas integration will automatically add students in your course as Viewers to the course folder in Panopto.
  • Users with the Viewer role on the parent folder will be able to record and upload videos to the assignments folder, as well as be able to edit and delete their own videos.
  • Users are unable to change the folder's settings and permissions, or view its statistics.
  • Users will not be able to see any other user's videos in the folder, unless otherwise indicated.
    • To allow viewers to see others' videos: Open the Settings menu for the Assignments folder and navigate to the Settings tab. Select the checkbox next to Allow viewers to see each other's sessions.

Creating a Panopto Video Assignment in Canvas

1. Navigate to your course in Canvas. Select the Assignments tab, located in the left-hand navigation, then click the blue +Assignment button in the top right to add a new assignment.

2. In the assignment editor, fill out the assignment name and description as needed. Instructions for what students can expect from the submission process can be found here. Consider using this article as a “how-to” guide for how they go about submitting their video assignments.

3. Ensure that the Submission Type is set to Online and that the Text Entry checkbox is selected so that students have access to the Panopto embed tool.

4. Click Save at the bottom of the page to save the assignment, and then select Publish when you are ready for students to review it.

Reviewing and Grading Student Assignments

1. Navigate to the Assignment and click SpeedGrader in the upper right corner.

2. Each submission will include an embedded version of the students' Panopto videos.

3. Add submission comments and grades as needed.

Closing an Assignment Folder

Once all Viewers have submitted to the assignment folder, or the deadline for the assignment has been reached, you can close the assignments folder. To do so:

  • Select the cog wheel icon in the upper right corner of the parent folder to open the Settings menu.
  • Underneath Assignment Folder on the Overview tab, select Close. Note: A pop-up window will appear to confirm that you want to close the folder, as this action cannot be undone. Closing an assignment folder prevents viewers of this folder from accessing and adding content to the assignment folder. The assignment folder and its content will remain accessible to you as a creator.

As noted above, the folder creator will still be able to access the assignments folder and its submissions. It will appear as closed in the Assignment Folder section of the Settings menu for the parent folder and include the date on which it was closed. If needed, you can open a new assignments folder by repeating the steps in this guide.
