The University of Central Florida now offers the ability to add Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) to your NID account. Using this service along with a strong password provides extra protection that can help prevent the risk of account compromise and unauthorized access. This can help reduced the likelihood your data becomes exposed or corrupted.
What is Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)?
Multi-factor authentication (MFA), sometimes referred to as 2FA, requires you to verify your identity in two different ways (e.g., entering a password and a notification pushed to your smartphone or smart device).
Why should you protect your NID with MFA?
Today’s sophisticated cyber security threats necessitate the use of strong authentication systems to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive information. Passwords alone do not offer strong enough identity verification, and, with enough time, passwords can be cracked. Enabling MFA on your NID will help reduce the risk of unintended access even if your password becomes compromised as it will require a second verification.
Will I need Duo and Microsoft Authenticator for MFA?
UCF currently supports both Duo and Micrsoft Authenticator for MFA on an application-by-application basis. UCF ISO is undergoing a project to consolidate all applications under Microsoft MFA but at this time one may get requests from both MFA providers depending upon which applications are used. Once this consolidation project is complete all applications will use Microsoft MFA.
