How to check or install Windows Updates on Windows 10, 8.1, and 7


This article applies to Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7. This article will show the step-by-step process to verify and initiate a Microsoft Windows Updates installation cycle.

 
Microsoft security updates are released on the second Tuesday of each month. For personal machines, this is available to you as soon as Microsoft makes them available. If this is a UCF IT managed device, your device will be subject to the update schedule setup for your area; which is typically 10 days after 'Patch Tuesday'. 
 
Windows 10 (Personal or non-managed Device)
 

  1. Type 'Windows Update' into the windows search bar and select Windows Update Settings




  2. Click on Check for Updates


    Please Note: if no updates appear as available, you can always attempt to click on the "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update." link if shown.




  3. Click on Install now and follow any remaining on-screen prompts. (The computer may require a restart for the updates to complete successfully).

 

Windows 10 (UCF IT Managed, Using SCCM)
 

  1. Type 'Software Center' into the windows search bar and select Software Center



  2. Click on Updates and then click on Install AllFollow any remaining on screen prompts. (The computer may require a restart for the updates to complete successfully).

Windows 8.1

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.

  2. Tap or click Settings.

  3. In the search box, type Windows Update.

  4. Tap or click Install optional updates.

  5. In the details pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

  6. If you see a message telling you that important or optional updates are available, or telling you to
        review important or optional updates, click the message to view the updates to install.

  7. In the list, select the check box for the updates that you want to install under Important or Optional, and then tap or click Install

 

Windows 7

  1. Click Start, type update in the search box, in the list of results, click Windows Update.

  2. In the details pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

  3. If you see a message telling you that important or optional updates are available,
        or telling you to review important or optional updates, click the message to view the updates to install.

  4. In the list, select the check box for the updates that you want to install, click OK, and then click Install updates.
